On October 11, Tatarstan State Counsellor Mintimer Shaimiev had a meeting with Consul General of Turkey in Kazan İsmet Erikan.

Erikan is the twelfth Consul General since the establishment of the Consulate General of Turkey in Kazan in 1996. He has started his work in Kazan on October 1 of the current year.

During the diplomatic service, Erikan worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey and its foreign offices in the USA, Bulgaria, Singapore and other countries.

Shaimiev congratulated the Turkish diplomat on the appointment to the new post and noted that the establishment of the Turkish Consulate General in Kazan was the achievement of the perestroika years when the meeting of Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov and Turkish President Turgut Özal was possible and the ways for multilateral relations between Turkey and Tatarstan were opened.

The meeting participants discussed the possibilities of joint projects in culture, education, preservation of the language and historical heritage.

Erikan thanked Shaimiev for the warm welcome and emphasized that he was pleased to meet the first Tatarstan President, an experienced politician who made a significant contribution to the development of multilateral cooperation between Turkey and Tatarstan.
