On the final day of the European Short Water Swimming Championships, the athletes set several world and European records.
400 meters freestyle, women
The third gold in Kazan was won by Anastasia Kirpichnikova, who added another swim to her 800 and 1500 meters victories. The second was her compatriot Anna Egorova, who was seriously ill shortly before the championship, but was able to recover.
"The impressions are very good, especially after my bad luck in the 1500-meter swim. I am very happy, although I probably could have shown a better time. But now it's good. I am grateful to everyone who supported me," Anastasia said.
"I am very happy with my medal. I was ill for a long time, I didn't think that I would participate in the European Championship at all, but in the end I showed one of the best results in my career," said Anna Egorova.
Anastasia Kirpichnikova, Russia - 3:59.18
Anna Egorova, Russia - 4:00.52
Isabel Marie Gose, Germany - 4:01.37
400 meters complex swimming, men
18-year-old Ilya Borodin swam 400 meters in complex swimming with a junior world and European record. He was more than a second ahead of the Italian Razzetti, who was in the lead after the first hundred.
"I had a goal, and I fulfilled it. Maybe I don't look very happy, but it's because I'm tired. It was a difficult season, I was sick several times, and it's not fun at all," Ilya Borodin said.
"I wanted to win 2-3 medals at this championship, and I succeeded. To be honest, I wanted to swim in 3:59 today, but it turned out the way it turned out. I'm happy with that, too," the Italian swimmer said.
Ilya Borodin, Russia - 3:58.83
Alberto Razzetti, Italy - 4:00.34
Hubert Kosh, Hungary - 4:03.16
50 meters breaststroke, women
Four athletes swam out of 30 seconds at a distance of 50 meters breaststroke, and the fate of gold was decided at the finish. A little faster than the competitors was Italian Arianna Castiglioni, who became the European champion in the individual swim for the first time.
"I didn't show the best time, but I still won the first gold medal in the individual heats. The right tactics and, of course, the attitude helped me," Arianna explained her victory.
Arianna Castiglioni, Italy - 29.66
Benedetta Pilato, Italy - 29.75
Nika Godun, Russia - 29.80
100 meters freestyle
Kliment Kolesnikov joined the company of swimmers who are taking away three gold medals from Kazan. He beat Italian Alessandro Miressi in the 100-meter freestyle.
"I am very happy with my victory. I know what else can be improved, but I see that it turned out well. I had some minor technical mistakes in this swim, and they need to be corrected," Kolesnikov commented on the victory.
"If we summarize everything, then bronze is a very good result. I was a little unlucky in the past heats, but maybe because I prefer long water," Vladislav Grinev said.
Kliment Kolesnikov, Russia - 45.58
Alessandro Miressi, Italy - 45.84
Vladislav Grinev, Russia - 46.06
50 meters butterfly, women
For Sarah Shestrem, the victory in the 50-meter butterfly was the fourth at the European Championships in Kazan, and she finished her performance in the individual heats with a record of 24.50 championships. In addition, the Swedish swimmer set a personal record.
"A personal record for me is even more important than the record of the European Championships. Everything went very well, and I'm happy with how I'm getting in shape after the injury. There are still a lot of competitions ahead, and it's nice to realize that I am in excellent condition," Sarah stressed.
"I never thought that I would win two medals at the European Championships at once. 50 meters is not my strong suit, as I focus more on the Olympic hundred meters. But today I have a personal record, and I competed with very fast swimmers," the Greek athlete said.
Sara Shestrem, Sweden - 24.50
Maike de Waard, Netherlands - 24.97
Silvia di Pietro, Italy and Anna Ntuntunaki, Greece - 25.09
800 meters freestyle, men
Another record was set in the men's 800-meter freestyle swim. At the same time, two athletes improved the achievement of Yannick Agnel, set in 2012. Italian Gregorio Paltrinieri beat German Florian Wellbrok by only five hundredths of a second, and it is his name that is now inscribed in the book of records of European swimming.
Gregorio Paltrinieri, Italy - 7:27.94
Florian Wellbrok, Germany - 7:27.99
Sven Schwartz, Germany - 7:33.85
Mixed combined relay, 4 by 50 meters
On Saturday, the Russian national team was stripped of a silver medal in the freestyle relay for an error in the order of performances. On the final day of the tournament, the Russians still won the award, but were content with only bronze. Kira Toussaint, Arnaud Cumming, Maike de Waard and Tom de Boer swam with a world record, and it was very difficult to compete with them this evening.
"Of course, we knew that we could win a medal, but gold and a world record… It's just wow! A great end to the championship for us," de Waard said.
"This is a pleasant surprise. We knew that Russia and Italy have very strong teams, so gold is something unreal. We are insanely happy with the victory," said Arnaud Cumming.
Netherlands – 1:36.18
Italy – 1:36.39
Russia – 1:36.42
The Russian national team won the most gold medals at the European Championship in Kazan – 11. The total number of awards was not equal to the Italians – 35. The Netherlands team has 8 gold awards and 18 in total.
