On March 12, Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov, State Counsellor of Tatarstan Mintimer Shaimiev, Prime Minister of the republic Aleksey Pesoshin, members of the regional government and guests took part in the eighth meeting held by Chairman of the State Council of Tatarstan Farid Mukhametshin of the regional State Council of the 6th convocation.

The agenda included 23 issues. In particular, people’s deputies considered amendments to the Constitution of the Russian Federation.

During the meeting, Shaimiev addressed parliamentarians. He noted that the Constitution of the Russian Federation was adopted in a difficult transition period after the collapse of the USSR, but this was a decisive factor in the beginning of stabilization of the political and socio-economic situation in the country. “The Constitution is being amended. Introducing and supporting these proposals, we should certainly think that the amendments will make better taking into account that Russia is a multinational and multi-faith country,” Shaimiev emphasized.

He drew attention to the fact that Russia is a multinational country and today it is difficult to come to a consensus. “It is not that easy. Our country is not a simple one. I have always said that Russia is the most difficult federation in the world, being multinational and multi-faith. We must be very careful to take all the steps. But now we cannot do without the proposed amendments,” Shaimiev said.

Earlier, the people’s deputies of the State Council of the republic prepared an appeal to Russian President in connection with the adoption of the law on amendments to the Constitution of the Russian Federation. Shaimiev called for the preservation of native languages and the development of the education system in this appeal. He also called for the setting up of a special commission under the State Council of Tatarstan to preserve the native language.

Minnikhanov supported Shaimiev, noting the need for more systematic work on the study of the native language. “This is a painful issue and it is worthy to be addressed by the Head of State. This is within the Constitution and the federal law. I am sure that we will do this work. Addressing the people’s deputies, I ask you to support amendments to the Constitution of the Russian Federation,” Tatarstan President added.

Minnikhanov also supported Shaimiev regarding a special commission on mother tongue issues, suggesting that it be headed by Deputy Chairman of the State Council of the republic Marat Akhmetov.

Then the people’s deputies voted for the decision to support the law on the amendment of the Constitution of the Russian Federation, and also adopted their appeal to Putin.
