On January 22, at the Kazan Expo International Exhibition Centre, Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov, Russian Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin and the President of the Russian Special Olympics Olga Slutsker took part in the opening ceremony of the Special Olympics United Games.
The Games are aimed at developing an inclusive society and mass involvement of people with disabilities in regular physical training and sports. The Special Olympics movement is celebrating its 55th anniversary this year. Russia has been participating in competitions since 1990.
“United Games is a special project that helps us understand each other. All athletes will be able to try their hand in competitions, feel the joy of victory and fully enjoy the emotions of fans. You are all united by the love of life and the desire to move forward in your achievements. I am sure that you and your loved ones will feel happy and comfortable in Tatarstan. We will do everything possible», Minnikhanov said.
Competitions will be held simultaneously in 10 summer and 8 winter sports. More than 2,000 special athletes, coaches and attendants from 59 regions of Russia and the Republic of Belarus came to the competitions in the capital of Tatarstan. The competition will last until January 27.
